INTRODUCTION
Personality is generally defined as habits, attitudes, traits that a person has that develop when a person interacts with other people. Personality can also include the preferences, habits, values, and beliefs that shape a person’s identity. Each person is unique in their personality, which is formed from genetic factors, life experiences, environment, and learning throughout their lifetime. Personality is also often defined as certain characteristics that stand out in an individual. So personality refers to how an individual appears or makes an impression on other individuals. There is a theory of personality development which is an attempt to explain how a person’s personality is formed and develops over time. There are several different theories in psychology that explain how individuals shape their personalities from childhood to adulthood. one of the theories that discusses the nature and development of personality forms possessed by humans. The main elements in this theory are motivation, emotions and other aspects of personality. One of the famous developmental theories is Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory.
Sigmund Freud was a psychological scientist best known for his ideas about human personality based on the analysis of dreams, and his extensive reading of various scientific and humanistic literature. These experiences are the basic data for the evolution of Freud’s personality theory or what we also know as psychoanalytic theory. For Freud, this theory tends to follow observations in the concept of personality, so that it will continue to undergo revision, even until the last 50 years of his life. Psychoanalysis is a branch of science developed by Sigmund Freud and his followers as a study of human psychological functions and behavior. There are many personality theories put forward by experts and of course they have different opinions about personality. However, in all the theories put forward there are obstacles to personality development.
OBSTACLES THAT OCCUR IN PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT
Personality factors are the result of life learning. Personality can always be developed in a better direction through the learning process. A person who has an attractive personality is an individual who is able to adapt to the environment and has strong emotional stability which is reflected in attitudes, responsible behavior and a high level of social sensitivity. Personality development can be hampered by two factors. These factors can be internal factors or external factors.
The first is internal factors. This factor generally comes from oneself. Where obstacles to personality development originate from within the individual. For example, individuals do not have clear life goals, individuals lack motivation and enthusiasm in life. Usually this occurs due to trauma and bad emotional experiences, for example traumatic experiences such as abuse, deep loss, or violence can hinder personality development, this can result in difficulties in managing emotions, building healthy relationships, and developing positive thought patterns. In addition, there may also be mental or physical health problems such as depression, anxiety, or personality disorders, as well as serious physical health problems. This can result in difficulties in regulating emotions, building healthy relationships, and developing positive thought patterns. Meanwhile, external factors are cultural traditions and community/social acceptance. Cultural tradition factors in each culture
A person experiences pressure to develop a personality pattern that conforms to the standards determined by his or her culture. Cultural groups remain as models for the intended personality patterns and pressure the individuals who are members of them to behave in accordance with the cultural norms of the group concerned. Then the societal/social acceptance factor, societal acceptance or the social environment also influences an individual’s desire to develop their personality. High social acceptance creates a high sense of self-confidence which has an effect on increasing positive self-concept. Meanwhile, low community or social acceptance will make a person have low self-esteem, withdraw from social contact, which will result in a tendency to close oneself which will influence the development of a negative self-concept. These factors can have a negative impact on the formation of a person’s personality and development. However, it is important to remember that each individual may respond or overcome these barriers in different ways and with the right support can experience positive growth and development.
There are several ways to overcome personality inhibition. The first thing that needs to be done is motivation, of course personality development will not occur if there is no will or motivation from oneself. If you do not have the motivation or enthusiasm for personality development, then personality development will be difficult to carry out. The second is family support. It will be quite difficult if the process is without support from the family. Therefore, support or support from family is very important for a better personality. Communicate well, this can be done by engaging in positive activities. Taking part in enriching activities, such as art, sports, or social activities, can help distract people and build new skills. And the last thing is to do psychological therapy. Undergoing this therapy can help individuals understand their feelings, thoughts and behavior, as well as provide tools or strategies to manage or overcome the problems they face.
